Small Mall presents short artists talks from some of Pittsburgh's favorite artists in our Tiny Talk series

During COVID-19, Small Mall continues to bringing you quality arts programming through the self-quarantines and stay-at-home orders. Our Tiny Talks series will come to your home with our Living Room Edition until we can all see each other again.

We host these talks through Zoom, a video conference platform that can host multiple users within one chat together. A Small Mall staff member moderates the conversation with the featured artist. Participants have the opportunity to ask their own questions during these talks as well. All Zoom events are private, and we receive your email addresses through the sign up forms to send you invite links one hour ahead of the talk.

Living Room Edition events are pay-what-you-can, between $5-20 to sign up. Proceeds go to Small Mall staff and the artists to help them through this crisis.

Tiny Talk: Living Room Editions feat. Mak O'Connor

Wednesday April 21st

Coming up on Wednesday, April 21st is our Tiny Talk featuring artist Mak O'Connor! We're looking forward to talking with Mak and hearing about her work and process as an artist.

Cost of admission is $5-$20, sliding scale. To attend, you must purchase a ticket below. Participants will receive a Zoom link to the event one hour before the event begins.

More about Mak:

Mak O’Connor is an artist, designer, and researcher based in Pittsburgh, PA. With a background in global health and a graduate degree in design science, Mak is drawn to the multidisciplinary potentials of art, design, and health. Interested in how the built environment shapes behavior, she offers her energy towards (re)designing and (re)thinking the built environment to provide humans and our living counterparts with the best possible stage for the performance of life.

Exploring how space-making informs meaning-making, Mak uses paint to illuminate our reciprocal and continuous interactions with the built environment, our living counterparts, and with each other. She is particularly interested in self-destructive behaviours, and more specifically how the limitations of normative expression may fuel self-harm. She thinks about creative expression as rebellion and as a redirection of self-destructive energies. Coming to understand freedom of self-expression as a key factor in healing, she is asking how we might find visceral safety through perceptual emancipation.

Sean Carroll is an artist using photography and video raised in coastal Massachusetts, now living in Pittsburgh. He received an MFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he lived for many years, and teaches within the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

‘A documentarian at heart I use cameras to collect and catalog, to make pictures that document particular places and experiences. I focus on ongoing, thematic projects that archive everyday surroundings in a variety of settings over time. Paying attention to the changes and subtle, often humorous inaccuracies I find in the world I use the camera to organize them into visceral moments.'
